Halifax Campus
(female-identifying only)
We offer a single gender (female-identified-only) space in residence at Ä¢¹½AV, located in Shirreff Hall’s Newcombe House. Eligible students can indicate their request to live here on their application. Â
Eligibility
Only students who self-identify as female, non-binary, or transgender can indicate on their application that they would like to live in this area. 
Community
This area creates an environment where those who are living there feel comfortable and safe as a female-identified, non-binary, or transgender person sharing spaces such as washrooms, shower spaces (shower stalls are private), hallways, elevators, and stairwells. 
Additional information
The Residence Office recognizes a student's right to self-identify their gender and/or gender identity. As such, students are assigned their room based on their self-identified gender and/or gender identity, not their assigned sex at birth.
Please note: There are no restrictions or limitations on the gender or gender identity of guests to this assigned living area, or to the Ä¢¹½AV employees, support staff, and emergency services who may be present. 
Truro Campus
Our Truro residences offer single-gender communities for female-identifying residents in all of our buildings - Chapman, Fraser, and Trueman.
We also offer a community for male-identifying residents in Fraser House.

Queer and trans community space
We offer a queer and transgender community space in residence at Ä¢¹½AV, located in Risley Hall. 
This option is for students who choose to self-identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and/or would like to live in a unique area of residence dedicated to support and the shared experiences of queer and trans people. This may include assigned roommates, neighbours, and assigned student leaders who also identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ and some who do not. All are welcome in this unique space regardless of sexuality or gender!
Please note: There are no restrictions or limitations on the gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation of students, guests to this assigned living area, or to the Ä¢¹½AV employees, support staff, and emergency services who may be present.
Quiet areas
Halifax Campuses
We offer quiet spaces in Howe Hall, Risley Hall, Shirreff Hall, LeMarchant Place, and Glengary Apartments.
Quiet area communities can expect 24 hours of quiet, with relaxed hours from 8:30 a.m. -10:30 p.m. »å²¹¾±±ô²â. 
Regular quiet hours in all Halifax residences are from 10:30 p.m. - 8 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 1 a.m. - 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Extreme noise is never permitted in any residence area. All our communities expect a reasonable level of quiet to be able to sleep and study and we require all our students to respect the needs of others.  
These quiet time rules will also apply to all guests who visit this floor and to respect the residents in the quiet area communities.
Truro Campus
We offer quiet communities in our residence buildings on the Truro Campus.Â
Regular quiet hours in all Truro residences are from 10 p.m. - 8 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday, 11 p.m. - 8 a.m. Thursday, and from 1 a.m. - 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Extreme noise is never permitted in any residence area.
All our communities expect a reasonable level of quiet to be able to sleep and study and we require all our students to respect the needs of others.  
Substance free
We offer a substance-free space in residence at Ä¢¹½AV, located in Howe Hall. 
This option is for all students who wish to live in a residence community that is free from substances, which include alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, drugs and/or drug paraphernalia. This community is intended to create a comfortable environment to learn and grow in. 
This expectation will also apply to all guests who visit this floor and to respect the residents in this community.
