ᾱ’s!
ĢAV is in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. We are all Treaty people.
For decades, programs and initiatives like the Transition Year Program (TYP), the Schulich School of Law’s Indigenous Blacks & Mi’kmaq Initiative (IB&M), and others have created pathways for young people from Mi’kmaw communities into higher education.
Since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action, ĢAV has been increasingly committed to strengthening relationships with Indigenous peoples, and to serving their postsecondary needs and interests in a respectful, collaborative manner.
But gaps remain, and much work still needs to be done.
Elders in Residence and Traditional Knowledge Keepers
We who are living on Mi’kmaw Territory are all beneficiaries of the Peace & Friendship Treaty and pay our respect to the Elders and Indigenous Traditional Knowledge Keepers.
Through the Elders In Residence and Traditional Knowledge Keepers program, the university recognizes the important role of Elders and Knowledge Keepers to the ĢAV Indigenous community and the wider non-indigenous community.
