Global Agri‑Food Rankings
Canada Rises to 7th Place in Global Agri-Food Rankings,Accordingto report by ĢAV’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab andMNP
Halifax, N.S. – October 16, 2025– Canada has climbed from 11th to 7th place in thesecond edition of the Global Agri-Food Most Influential Nations Ranking, produced and commissioned byMNPthrough theAgri-Food Analytics Lab (AAL) at ĢAV. The report is being released to markWorld Food Day.
The report benchmarks G20 nations and the European Union across six pillars: innovation, food security, retail and fiscal regime, trade, sectoral competitiveness, and sustainability.
The report highlights Canada’s growing strength in trade, sectoral development, and early-stage innovation. More than 320 Canadian agri-food start-ups have collectively raised over US $3 billion, reinforcing the country’s global reputation for entrepreneurship and intellectual property protections.
However, the findings also point to areas of concern:
- Food insecurity remains high– Nearly one in five Canadians experience moderate to severe food insecurity, despite Canada’s agricultural capacity.
- Retail concentration is intensifying– The top four grocery retailers now control 72% of national sales, one of the highest levels in the G20, limiting competition and innovation.
- Innovation bottlenecks persist– A 37% drop in R&D investment since 2023 has slowed commercialization and scale-up opportunities for smaller firms.
“Entrepreneurship is at the heart of Canada’s agri-food opportunities,” saidMatt McDonald, National Leader, Food and Beverage Processing atMNP. “When competition grows, so do transparency and accountability — and that directly improves food security, fuels innovation, and ensures Canadian producers can thrive on the global stage."
“Canada’s advancement is encouraging, but the results underscore that progress is uneven,” saidDr. Sylvain Charlebois, Director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab. “We need stronger policy alignment, greater investment in commercialization, and more support for small and mid-sized enterprises to ensure that Canada’s agri-food system is resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive.”
On the global stage, the European Union topped theranking, followed by Germany, Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Canada’s rise puts it ahead of countries like Japan, China, and Brazil.
The report emphasizes that Canada has momentum to consolidate its gains by leveraging trade growth, enhancing sustainability initiatives, and investing in the health and wellness food sectors — an emerging global market valued at nearly C$200 billion.
Tariffs have tested Canada’s food industry ,but in that pressure, we’ve built momentum,” saidMatt. “From scaling foodtechto diversifying exports, Canada can continue to build a resilient and abundant F&B industry – one that is less reactive and more future ready”.
