Develop the Language Skills to Communicate Across Cultures

Language is at the heart of intercultural communication. Learning another language—or continuing to deepen your knowledge of one you already speak—helps you understand different perspectives, communicate more effectively, and build meaningful relationships across cultures.

The Language Learning component of the Certificate encourages all students to develop multilingual and intercultural competencies that will benefit them academically, professionally, and personally.

You can satisfy this requirement through one of the following options.

Option 1 – Study a Language

Complete 6 credit hours (one full credit) in a language other than English at the 2000 level or above.

Courses must be taught in the target language.

This option is ideal for students who are continuing to develop proficiency in a second or additional language.

Option 2 – Mi'kmaq or American Sign Language

Complete an approved non-credit community-based course in Mi'kmaq or American Sign Language (ASL).

Advisor approval is required.

Option 3 – Already Proficient in Another Language?

Students who demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English through prior study, native or heritage language background, or equivalent qualifications may satisfy the Language Learning requirement by completing 6 credit hours of approved upper-level coursework in that language or in related fields, such as:

• Literature
• Culture
• Cinema
• Linguistics
• Translation
• Other approved language-related courses

This option recognizes the value of multilingualism while encouraging students to continue expanding their linguistic, cultural, and intercultural competencies rather than simply waiving the Language Learning requirement.

Students who wish to satisfy the Language Learning requirement through this option are encouraged to consult the CIC Advisor before selecting their courses to determine the coursework that best aligns with their academic background and educational goals.
