Peter Mushkat ESS Second-Year Scholarship
The College of Sustainability offers a scholarship to an ESS student who has completed the first year of their ESS major/honours and intends on continuing their studies into their second year of an ESS major/honours. The student awarded the scholarship will have achieved outstanding academic performance in their first ESS year and also demonstrated an engagement in activities that furthers the cause of sustainability, diversity, and equity in their community during the past several years. Community can include the College of Sustainability, ĢAV, or the student’s residential community.
The application will consist of a form available in early May on which the student will briefly describe their academic achievements and activities related to sustainability. A letter of reference will be required. The due date is normally the first of June of the year the scholarship is awarded.

ĢAV Steven Mannell
Steven Mannell is an architect with a fascination for the ways in which human societies and settlements interact with their environments. After twenty years of professional practice and teaching in architecture schools, in 2007 he brought his passion for the built environment to a cross-disciplinary collaboration among ĢAV professors and students that created the vision of the College of Sustainability.
During his time as Founding Director of the College (from 2009 to 2020) and teaching the SUST 1000 course for fourteen years, Steve used his role to orchestrate a diversity of perspectives and approaches to create a unique educational experience for students and set the tone for the College: “In my teaching, I try to model taking academia into action, and ideas into change.”
