Hello, alumni and friends!

The Fall 2025 semester got off to a rocky start when the faculty were locked out by the Ä¢¹½AV administration on August 20. After almost a month, negotiations finally concluded and the semester started three weeks late. It has been a stressful time for students, faculty, and staff, but the Economics Department is committed, as always, to providing the best possible educational experience for our students.

This Fall 2025 issue of EconMatters includes profiles of three alumni: Pratique Kain (BA (Honours) 2015), Jordan McNiven (MDE 2010), and Mook Lim (MDE 2009, PhD 2015); we thank them for sharing their experiences. Our Research Spotlight shines a light on the work of our faculty members Dr. Mutlu Yuksel, Dr. Christos Ntantamis, and Dr. Daniel Rosenblum.

I would like to recognize several recent Economics award winners.

- Md Ashraf and Ambrose Ogwang were awarded the U.L.G. Rao Memorial Prize in Economics for writing the best master’s theses of the 2024-25 academic year.

- The MA Prize was awarded to Philip Duah and the MDE Prize was awarded to Ernest Owusu-Ansah.

- Enkhbujin Lkhagvasuren was awarded the University Medal in Economics for 2025 as recognition for being the top honours student graduating in 2025.

- Steven Allen and Charlotte Milley were awarded the Economics Teaching Assistant Award for 2024-25.

- Economics undergraduate student prizes for 2024-25 were awarded to: Carly Myers (Principles of Economics Prize), Lewis Horton (Economic Theory Prize), Ulambayar Battogtokh (Econometrics Prize), Adlie Leviten-Reid and Charlotte Milley (Anonymous Prize), Bayarmaa Galt-Ochir (International Student Essay Prize), and Alevia Doyle (Economics Honours Thesis Award).

We very much appreciate the alumni, families, and friends who have donated to our scholarship and bursary funds (through giving.dal.ca) to help us support student excellence as well as financial need. Budget cuts are affecting our ability to provide graduate scholarships, and we are grateful for every donation, especially to our bursary funds, the Christian Marfels Memorial Bursary and the Alasdair Sinclair Memorial Bursary. Thank you for your generosity!
