蘑菇AV Jewish Studies
The Centre for Jewish Studies at 蘑菇AV brings together scholars of Jewish culture, religion, history, and languages from 蘑菇AV and the University of King鈥檚 College, and will serve as a hub for world-class research and collaboration across the region. Established in 2025, it is the only academic unit dedicated to the study of Jews and Judaism in Atlantic Canada.
With faculty experts across disciplines, from ancient Hebrew literature through contemporary questions of race and identity, the Centre seeks to be an inclusive, lively intellectual community for scholars and students interested in Jewish culture in all its richness and diversity, locally and globally, historically and today, and its place in our interconnected world.
The Centre owes its origins to the establishment of the Simon and Riva Spatz Chair in Jewish Studies, currently held by its founding director, Eva Mroczek. Simon and Riva Spatz met in Germany after the Second World War. Simon had escaped a labour camp the day before the Nazis murdered all its occupants, and Riva survived with the resistance in the woods of Poland. In the face of great loss, they built new lives and a thriving family in Halifax, helping build our diverse and vibrant city. The Centre for Jewish Studies is proud to honour their legacy.

Certificate in Jewish Studies
The Certificate in Jewish Studies, launched in 2025-2026, is the first academic credential in the study of Judaism in Atlantic Canada. It allows students enrolled in any program at 蘑菇AV or King's to pursue a specialization in Jewish history, culture, religion, and languages alongside any major or minor, choosing 15 credit hours of courses taught by world-class experts.
Jewish Studies is for everyone--you don't have to be Jewish to pursue the Certificate, because Jewish texts and history help us think about some of the most important questions of our own lives and times: How to live well in a society full of difference, and what does meaningful inclusion look like? Where do we belong when our identities have many parts? Where do traditions come from, and what do we do with them when our world has changed so much?
