Changes to lab safety training

Posted by Stephanie Rogers on August 26, 2026 in News

Please note the upcoming changes to the process for enrolling graduate students and new lab employees in mandatory lab safety training.

In collaboration with Extended Learning, a Laboratory Safety Training course site on Brightspace has been created to streamline registration and ensure people working in labs have access to accurate training resources.

Effective August 31, 2026, supervisors will use the Brightspace course site to enroll their graduate students and employees in Lab Safety Training. Under the new process:

  • Supervisors will be responsible for ensuring graduate students and employees are enrolled in the Brightspace course site
  • Graduate students and employees must complete all required safety training before beginning unsupervised laboratory work. They will also be required to submit proof of completion to their supervisor
  • Graduate students and employees will self-enroll for the in-person portion of the training within the Brightspace course site

The Brightspace site will act as a repository for all required training courses and resources for lab safety training. The course site will also enable everyone to self-register for the required in-person lab safety training session with Tennille Crossman. In-person sessions for the Fall 2026 semester are scheduled for September 16 (2:30 pm) and September 29 (2:30 pm).

Detailed instructions and supporting resources will be provided separately, prior to August 31.

Thank you for your cooperation and continued commitment to maintaining a safe research environment. If you have any questions, please contact Tennille Crossman or Queena Crooker-Smith.
