  • Public lecture onÌý with guest speaker Nicolas Schutz, Professor of Economics, University of Mannheim, Germany in collaboration with the Department of Economics.ÌýThis presentation will explain the theory behind dual pricing, and the speaker will discuss the rationale of the European Commission (for competition) on its ruling on these practices. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and people began to flee the country, the hospitality of neighbouring countries towards Ukrainians was set inÌýstark contrast to their reluctance to accommodate refugees from Africa and the Middle East. Critics suggested that Europe was treating refugees from Ukraine better than those from the Global South, and attributed this difference to race. Using Romania as a case study this film highlights the factors that might matter in the categorization of refugees as either deserving or undeserving of state protection, such as nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, class, gender, as well as geopolitically shaped historical commonalities.Ìý Thursday 4th December 2025, 6.00 - 8.30 p.m. Room 1016, Kenneth Rowe Management Building, 6100 University Avenue.
