University‑Wide Teaching Awards

ĢAV has an exceptional and complementary array of faculty and instructors, all who have help to build ĢAV’s reputation for educational excellence across Canada and around the world. ĢAV honours instructors and graduate students on an annual basis with a number of teaching excellence and innovation awards for their contribution to maintaining and supporting ĢAV's reputation as being a leader in higher education.
Academic Innovation Award
This award will be presented annually to an individual or team who has developed an innovative initiative that has resulted in a sustained impact on student learning at ĢAV.The award may be withheld if there is no suitable candidate.
An initiative shall be deemed ‘innovative’ if it makes a significantly new contribution to the student learning experience in the department(s) or Faculty(ies) involved. The innovative initiative should be new to the department(s) or Faculty(ies) involved, although it may already be in practice at ĢAV in another academic unit, or have been developed elsewhere in the academic community.
Award for Excellence in Education for Equity
This award will be presented to an individual or team that has enhanced the ĢAV teaching and learning environment through excellence in education for equity.The award may be withheld if there is no suitable candidate.
Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision
Excellence in graduate supervision is recognized as the successful mentorship of graduate students through an enriching, supportive and productive learning environment. Nominees shall have at least ten years supervision experience at the graduate level. The award may be withheld if there is no suitable candidate.
Award for Excellence in Online/Blended Course Development, Design, and Delivery
The award will be presented annually to an individual or team who has designed, developed and delivered an exceptional online/blended course that has had a notable impact on students.The award may be withheld if there is no suitable candidate. Nominees for this award will be faculty (full-time, limited term, or part-time academics) with a minimum of two years of teaching experience at ĢAV.
Contract and Limited‑term Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
Candidates must be a full-time contract or limited-term faculty member of the ĢAV teaching staff. While there is no rigid criterion for length and breadth of service at the university, a teaching record extending more than two years at ĢAV is expected, though the position need not be a 12-month appointment in each year.
Educational Leadership Award for Collaborative Teaching
This award is presented annually to recognize the collaborative work of a team of colleagues whose leadership has made a significant contribution to student learning at the department, Faculty or institutional level (primarily at ĢAV, and possibly beyond the institution). The award is open to all ĢAV faculty members, including department chairs and deans.The award may be withheld if there are no suitable candidates.
President’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching & Learning
Nominees for this award will normally have ten or more years of teaching at ĢAV. Candidates must be full‐time faculty or instructors at ĢAV.Nominees who currently hold, or have recently in the past one year held, academic administrative positions are excluded from being nominated for the The President’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning, unless such nominees are still teaching, either fully or partially.
Early Career Faculty Award of Excellence for Teaching
Candidates must be full-time, continuing faculty or instructors at ĢAV who have completed at least three years, but fewer than seven years of teaching duties in their current role at ĢAV and who have fulfilled all nomination requirements.
President’s Graduate/Undergraduate Student Teaching Award
The ĢAV President's Graduate/Undergraduate Student Teaching Awards are open to all qualified graduate student instructors (currently registered Master's and Ph.D. candidates) and all qualified undergraduate student instructors (currently registered in an undergraduate degree program), including previous nominees (but not previous recipients).
Sessional and Part-time Instructor Award for Excellence in Teaching
Candidates must be a part-time member of the ĢAV teaching staff. While there is no rigid criterion for length and breadth of service at the university, successful applicants are likely to have a teaching record extending over several years, including repeated delivery of one or more courses, with iterative development of their approach. Nominees shall normally be teaching at least one course at ĢAV in the Fall or Winter of the year of nomination.
