Engineering Robotics Design Competition

Action and suspense filled 蘑菇AV鈥檚 Design Commons last week as thirty three autonomous robots competed in the annual Engineering Robotics Design Competition. This year鈥檚 event, renamed to the 2022 Gregson Design Challenge, was in honour of the late Dr. Peter Gregson, a former professor from the Faculty of Engineering鈥檚 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

This year鈥檚 obstacle required robots to autonomously navigate through the course and locate at least three missing 鈥渕ines鈥�. Once located, robots were required to disarm the mines before physically grabbing the objects and transporting them to a designated location.

Each Spring, students from ECED 3902 (Electrical Engineering Design II) are provided with tool kits to design and build an autonomous robot capable of both navigating the obstacle course and completing a required set of tasks.

Engineering Robotics Design Competition

The kits contain basic components including, motors, electronics, LiDARs, ultrasonic rangers, onboard computers and microcontrollers. They are also provided with a small budget to purchase any additional components they鈥檇 like to add to their robots. In twelve short weeks, teams of three students put in roughly 350 hours of work to design and build their robots.

The term projects allows students to asses real world problems and develop the hardware and software required to solve those challenges. Troubleshooting and effective time management are key to building a reliable and robust custom robot. Verification and validation testing also essential in ensuring success.

Throughout the day long competition many robots lost their way within the course. Others trapped themselves in a corner and could not find their way out, while some robots collided with the mines before their were properly disarmed.

At the end of the day, four out of thirty three robots were able to find, disarm and remove five of six hidden mines. In the end, team five emerged on top. The winning team included Duncan Cameron, Rehan Khalid and Chidinma Onumadu.
